It wouldn't be the fastest ship around, but would be one of the cheapest ones to run. Covering the containers with a removable solar panel would add to the power significantly.

Again, not fast, but certainly cheap.

As a point of reference, the old Liberty freighters of WWII vintage were 400-450'long and had 2,500 HP power plants and would go 11 knots.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864176.post-30536771762344902832009-05-02T16:45:00.000+10:002009-05-02T16:45:00.000+10:00The cost of the Skysail seems cheap to me, at $250...The cost of the Skysail seems cheap to me, at $250,000 or so, when you consider that cape size dry bulk shippers were being leased for around $125,000 a day about a year ago.

Said to deliver up to 6,800hp.frflyerhttp://energysolutionswecanbelievein.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864176.post-33527861421396739252008-01-14T20:28:00.000+11:002008-01-14T20:28:00.000+11:00Comments at TOD :http://anz.theoildrum.com/node/35...Comments at TOD :

http://anz.theoildrum.com/node/3500#commentsBig Gavhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00682404837426502876noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864176.post-6730261184691149722008-01-14T08:47:00.000+11:002008-01-14T08:47:00.000+11:00Wow, sails for ships.Imagine the future possibilit...Wow, sails for ships.

Imagine the future possibilities! We could even put up vertical sticks off the deck of the ship (dunno, call them "masts") and attach the sails directly to them.

What will they think of next?

The world really is progressing fast.

:PAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
