Hibernating

Posted by Big Gav

The time has come for Peak Energy to go into winter hibernation - see you all again in a few weeks time. In the meantime you can find more news than you can read each day in the links to the right.

For those visitors who have come across this blog at random and want to know what on earth its all about (or confused long time readers who still haven't worked it out), the quick version is:

1. Peak oil is real and a problem (although not in itself as serious as some of the doomer schools of thought would have us believe, nor likely as imminent as some claim).

2. Global warming is real and a serious problem.

3. Oil dependence (and the desire to use it to control others) is leading us to do a lot of unpleasant things (and thus you'll see references to Iraq, terrorism, resource wars and the propaganda and surveillance industries)

4. There are lots of solutions for dealing with all 3 of these problems - however there is a lot of inertia and political resistance hindering the adoption of these (and some solutions to peak oil are anti-solutions to global warming, so dealing with both requires some intelligent policy and investment decisions to be made)

5. I like to add an element of randomness, so there is also a tendency for various pieces of technology news and unusual thinking from the fringes to get thrown in with news related to the above. This stops me getting too stale dealing with the same subject matter day after day - if you find these segments annoying, then go somewhere else - there are more than 100 million blogs out there...

Hi,

Firstly let me say thank you for running your blog, its keeping me up to date on climate change!

I have found an article on http://www.uranium-stocks.net/ about the possible effects of global warming on nuclear power plants, which might be of interest to you and your readers

http://www.uranium-stocks.net/rising-sea-levels-to-endanger-nuclear-future/

Its called Rising Sea Levels To Endanger Nuclear Future? and is well worth a read. I am sure the people at the site will be happy for you to publish it on your site, as there work is published on many other sites.

Let me know what you think,

Best Wishes

Dave

Have a pleasant break Gav.

I recently came across a book from the 70s called "Eating Oil" by Maurice Green in a second hand book shop. Filled with interesting tables (from a UK perspective) mercifully in SI units.

RE Jerome. Talk about delusions of mediocrity. ;-)

Interesting slant on the PMs sudden concern about Aboriginal communities.

SP

Hi SP - "Eating Oil" rings a bell but I can't remember where I heard about it before.

That Jerome guy did a good job of winding me up - I don't know what the hell he's been reading up until this point - I had half a mind to wander across to Canon Labs and yell at him.

As for the Rodent, viewed from that angle, the whole circus suddenly makes crystal clear sense.

I saw the media were quoting Germaine Greer this morning calling it a land grab as well, and pooh poohing the idea by saying "look - this crazy old bat believes this - it can't be true".

There was an interesting dynamic on the Today Show this morning, with noted insightful political commentators Kerri-Anne Kennerly and Russell Barwick from MMM going to town with the "crazy old loon Greer" / "Johnny is doing it to save the children - we've got to do something" line (a line accurately mocked in that key Crikey piece I quoted the other day).

Lisa Wilkinson at least had the wit to garble briefly in horror at them before rolling her eyes and shutting up - I wonder if her husband (Peter Fitzsimmons) or his cohort Mike Carlton will have anything to say about it...

Anyway - I hope Rudd has the decency to undo this disgrace if he gets into office.
