Peak Oil Portfolio Update

Posted by Big Gav in

Its been a while since I last checked on the peak oil portfolio, so by popular demand here's a look at how this ancient paper portfolio has fared as oil prices have really taken off.

The usual disclaimers apply - don't invest based on the rantings of strangers (or opinionated fools using their real names) on the internet. I'm not a financial adviser. This isn't financial advice. Etc etc.

Plus if I (a) knew what I was doing, (b) had lots of capital to gamble, and (c) had larger balls, I'd be a billionaire like Phil Matthews now and I probably wouldn't be sitting here tapping away on the keyboard (though this isn't entirely certain).

Bearing in mind that over this period, the oil price has risen from around US$73 to US$144 (positive for this portfolio), while the A$ has risen from 88 cents to 96 cents (negative) and the ASX has fallen from 6340 to 4998 (negative), here's how things are looking:

CompanyQuantityPriceValue
Oil Search (OSH)2520$6.03$15,195
Woodside (WPL)280$63.10$17,668
BHP (BHP)445$39.82$17,720
Origin (ORG)1355$16.28$22,060
Worley Parsons (WOR)965$33.10$31,940
Centennial Coal (CEY)1980$4.99$9,880
ROC Oil (ROC)3570$1.72$6,140
GRD (GRD)1755$0.71$1,240
TAP Oil (TAP)1690$1.63$2,760
Paladin (PDN)2200$6.50$14,300
Solco (SOO)16,665$0.05$820
Aust Renewable Fuels (ARW)3185$0.04$120
Karoon (KAR)2560$3.90$9,980
Compass Resources (CMR)3155$1.98$6,250
Downer EDI (DOW)820$6.09$4,990
Wind Hydrogen (WHN)25,000$0.135$3,375
Cash28,840$28,840
Total$193,280
since last-2.3%
since start+38.0%

By way of comparison (since last update):
WTI$73 (approx)$14497.0%
WTI (adjusted to A$)$83 (approx)$15080.0%
ASX 20063404998-21.0%

Alinta has been removed from the portfolio after being taken over last year - the amount realised ($13,840) has been put back in the cash kitty.

I should have done this calculation yesterday as it would have looked a lot better given the hammering the market (and large energy stocks) took today.

On the whole performance has been mediocre - this portfolio has made money, but you'd be far better off having taken a position in the oil futures market 3 years ago and sat on it...

Yes there is money to be made energy -- and exciting new ideas to develop.

It will just take a very long time and codt a great deal.

I would not advise investing in things to fight CO2 or global warming though. Too much snake oil being sold there.

It will be a wild ride!
