True - there's nothing green about this at all (the mind boggles at how much concrete was used in the construction of the complex).

But it is a cool image.

The Romans may have invented it but no country seems to love the stuff as much as Nihon... perhaps reaping the reward of all those engineers they trained post WWII.

I guess when you concrete line your rivers you then need this kind of infrastructure downstream...

What's that saying about problems hammers and nails?

I think a lot of its due to their response to the collapse of the bubble in the 1990's - lots and lots and lots of government funded construction projects, covering the country in concrete...
