In the TOD comments on my "locabucks" article I predicted Byron Bay would be the likely location for renewed experiments with local currencies in Australia.
I wasn't too far off the mark (both in timing and location), with nearby Brunswick Heads trying to get "Bruns Dollars" up and running.

The Brunswick Heads Bruns Dollar is actually not an attempt at establishing a local currency but rather just part of a a wide ranging "think global but buy local" sustainable economy education campaign which includes such elements pluggling the leaks, local economic multiplier effects, food miles, recycling and waste management. It is remarkable that for a Chamber of Commerce in a small relatively seaside town to be so progressive in a local marketing initiative The surrounding Byron area has a LETS system with its own printed banknotes but like many LETS systems in Australia it has languished in recent years.
