The SF Chronicle has a report on an effort to make the cost of solar power in San Francisco more transparent - Site for solar panel deals nearly ready.
City officials and independent engineers plan to announce this month that they've completed work on sf.solarmap.org, a Web site that allows San Franciscans to plug in their address and estimate the cost - and savings - possible with solar panels.
The site, completed by consultant CH2M Hill, makes the notoriously foggy city the first in the world to be completely mapped for its potential solar power. It covers 158,155 residential buildings and 16,851 commercial buildings and includes 98,424 government and other buildings.
It is aimed at helping encourage installation of 10,000 rooftop solar systems by 2010, saving emissions equivalent to that produced by 3,516 cars, and calculates potential electricity savings as well as costs after various governmental incentives.
