Energy Efficiency In The Data Center
Posted by Big Gav
This article discusses how to make data centres more energy efficient. I'm seeing some server consolidation projects here, but they seem to be rare and driven more by space constraints and administration and licencing costs than a need to be more energy efficient. No doubt that will change over time as energy costs rise. Obviously data centers aren't the only IT area where energy is wasted - turn your machine off when you go home and/or go to bed tonight...

Q: How much of an impact does the green buildings movement have on energy efficiency in the data center?
Sawyer: Data centers tend to be the place of the highest power density in a building. It's only a matter of time before it gets on people's radar. We're pushing now to make people aware that energy efficiency in the data center has a much bigger impact on the building's overall efficiency than efficiency in the lighting system or the cooling system.
