I have been hit as well as countless friends and family members of mine by cars on both bikes and motorcycles.
In every case I was hit (3), I was not moving, in a pedestrian lane and in a NON business area.
All happened over a decade ago but with all the more techno distractions... it has gotten much worse.
There is enough anger and rage on the roads... and I think most people would be mortified if they hit a biker, but there needs to be a lot more public awareness, signs and education for everyone.
I loaded my kids bikes with LED's, that look cool and make there bikes stand out day and night.
They are NOT allowed to ride on streets and to always ride with a friend (for a lot of safety reasons). Helmets?
I am VERY lucky to live in communities interconnected by sidewalks and bike paths.
Unlike traditional roads, bike paths can last decades with very little upkeep. And one accident could cost justify ALL paths in a small community.
Example of awesome LED light for bikes:

Cool - now that's real bike light :-)
I'm quite lucky where I live - lots of footpaths (sidewalks) and a good commuter bike path that covers some of the distance to the city.
